The Ilion Central School District is located in Ilion, NY in southern Herkimer County on the southern bank of central New York's historic Mohawk River.
With more than 1700 Pre-K–12 students, Ilion Central School District is the largest school district in Herkimer County. In 2000, the district completed a $32-million building project that added instructional and physical education space to our three campuses. The district is currently in the midst of a $20-million EXCEL construction project to improve technology, safety, and accessibility.
Students in grades K–6 attend one of two elementary schools—Barringer Road and Remington. Remington also hosts the district's Pre-K students in a special wing reserved just for the program. Grades 7-12 attend the Junior-Senior High School.
All three campuses have athletic fields and facilities. Our sports teams are the Golden Bombers and our school colors are Gold and Brown.
Ilion offers diverse cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities. The community is only 20 minutes away from the city of Utica, 75 minutes from Syracuse, and 90 minutes from the state capital Albany. The Erie Canal, Farmer's Museum, Baseball Hall of Fame, Fort Herkimer, Herkimer Diamond Mines, Glimmerglass Opera, Stanley Theatre, the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute, and the Adirondack Park area all less than an hour's drive away. Major shopping plazas, restaurants, health services, and theaters and just minutes away.
Area colleges include Herkimer County Community College, Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica College, SUNY Institute of Technology, Utica School of Commerce, St. Elizabeth Medical Center School of Radiology, St. Elizabeth College of Nursing, Faxton-St Luke's Healthcare School of Radiologic Technology, and Hamilton College.
Over 50 percent of local workers are employed in educational, health and social services (24 percent); manufacturing (14 percent); and retail trade (14 percent).
Ilion is a quaint village proud of its history. Settled in the early 1700s by Palatine Germans, it blossomed as a stop on the Erie Canal. Today it is the corporate home firearm manufacturer Remington Arms.
