There
is little argument that American schools need to improve if they are
to support societal expectations for global competitiveness. As such,
we must revisit how we envision school improvement and recognize that
all stakeholders in the district must share responsibility for change.
We must be innovative and focused in our endeavors. Teachers and other staff must be supported and recognized for their efforts to improve student learning. Varying constituencies must be fully engaged and their efforts coordinated if we are to see and sustain lasting improvements. Leadership will be distributed to those who wish to assume it and resources will be aligned with leadership projects and tie closely to our central (and most prominent) goal of promoting literacy.
Initial leadership projects have been identified by Dr. Mays-Smith. These projects are categorized utilizing the following schema for teachers and paraprofessionals:
Perch Projects
Perch Projects are related to individuals setting goals for their own improvement based upon district initiatives like Ancora Imparo and Model Schools. These projects would likely not be considered large enough in scope to replace APPR.
Precipice Projects
Precipice Projects are related to groups setting goals for improvement that effect the group and its practices. For example, a group may be a grade level team or department. These projects, at the discretion of participant and supervisors, could replace APPR.
Pinnacle Projects
Pinnacle Projects are related to systemic reforms, may have research implications and/or are directed at major improvement initiatives. These projects, at the discretion of participant and supervisors, could replace APPR.

Emily Dickinson is quoted as saying that "Hope is that thing with feathers that perches in the soul". We sincerely hope and plan that our Eagle Leadership projects will lead to improved school success and improved student achievement.
There are currently projects designed for teachers, related service professionals, paraprofessionals, students, parents, administrators and the community. There are plans to expand to other staff in the future.
