Following is a summary of the community responses to the questions asked at the Community Merger Discussion held on Dec. 6 at Ilion High School.
Each of the four questions is addressed on a separate page:
What would you suggest the board of education do if the districts choose not to merge?
Look for alternative ways to fund sports
Avoid grades 9-12 having 25 or more students (too high)
Explore more distance learning courses
Consider pay-for-play for non mandated sports, music, arts
More shared services such as business offices, IT services, purchasing and maintenance
Any using school facilities should have to contribute (scouts, non-school sports, etc.)
Merge two schools
Sharing athletics
Anything is worth a look
Cross training staff
Longer school days & four-day week to reduce overhead
Reconfigure elementary school; move all grades 5-6 into the high school
Focus on students; this reinforces the reluctance and resistance to change
Move away from the community (literally)
Seek corporate sponsorships
BOE will need to be more receptive to different ideas
Share administrators with another district
Reorganize buildings within the district
Fund-raising to reinstate lost programs
Cut all extracurriculars before kindergarten
Lobby state for “pay to play”
Seek 60 percent plus one voter majority for larger tax levy
Use volunteers instead of paid advisors, coaches, etc.
Boosters could raise money for sports, music, etc.
Split sessions and share facilities with other schools.
Increase class sizes
