The Community Advisory Committee tackled the tough question of how a merged district might use existing buildings at its fifth meeting on Thursday, April 28 at Herkimer BOCES. (view PDF of the agenda)
Each of the three subcommittees—Education, Finance/Personnel/Governance, and Functional Services/Operations— quizzed panels of superintendents, elementary principals, and secondary principals. The questions helped CAC members begin the difficult process of identifying the opportunities and challenges presented by various configurations and to seek other uses for buildings that might not be needed in a merged district.
The results of the conversation will be assembled into a listing of preferred building use options. At a future meeting, the committee will work to reduce the number of options and ultimately select one that they feel best meets the educational, financial, and functional uses of existing buildings. Should the communities approve a merger, it would be up to the new board of education to review the recommendation and decide whether to adopt it or explore different options.
The committee then took its first look at employee contracts, staff turnover rates, and the cost per full time employees serving in various jobs in each of the school districts. At the May 18 meeting, the group will discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by this information. (view PDF of the labor cost data)
