Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk to hold next community merger meeting
The Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk school districts will hold the second of four community merger meetings on Wednesday, July 25 in the Herkimer High School auditorium at 801 West German Street, Herkimer. Tours of the building begin at 4:30 p.m. and the meeting follows at 6 p.m. Residents of all three districts are encouraged to take to the tour and to attend the meeting.
The purpose of the meeting is to share the latest information on the proposed three-school merger and to provide residents an opportunity to ask merger related questions.
The Herkimer meeting will follow the same format as the preceding meeting held in early June at Mohawk. The evening will begin with a video and a brief review of the three-school proposal by school superintendents Joyce Caputo, Gary Tutty and Cosimo Tangorra. The superintendents, with assistance from members of the Community Advisory Committee, will then answer audience questions.
“Our communities have wrestled with the concept of a merger for more than two years,” said Mohawk Superintendent Joyce Caputo.
“Many people are very comfortable with the idea; others have questions. We are holding these meetings to give everyone the chance to tour the various buildings and to answer any questions people may have. Our presentation covers the big picture items in the merger. We will spend the bulk of the time answering questions from the audience.”
Assuming approval by the three boards of education, residents in each district will vote on Wednesday, Sept. 12 on an Advisory Referendum asking if the three districts should reorganize in a centralized district. If that referendum passes in all three districts, residents will vote on Thursday, Oct. 18 on a Statutory Referendum to formally approve the merger and to set the number of members and the length of term for board of education members. If the Statutory Referendum passes in all three districts, the merger becomes final and the new district begins full operation on July 1, 2013.
