Superintendent
Residents are invited to join a conversation about the proposed merger at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Junior-Senior High School auditorium. The evening will begin with a look at the district's financial future followed by a very brief recap of the merger study.
"We have four goals for the evening," said Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra, Jr.
"First, we want people to fully understand where Ilion Central School is headed financially and academically. Second, we want people to understand what is—and is not—in the merger study and give them a chance to share their thoughts. Third, we want ideas on what the district should do if the communities choose not to merge. And fourth, we want to answer questions that the study does not address.
"In a large group, that will be nearly impossible. So we are going to break into smaller groups, hold a discussion and then reconvene to share what each group discussed. We will finish up by answering as many questions as time allows."
The small groups will tackle four questions:
Question #1 - What is the greatest opportunity presented by the merger? And are there any opportunities the study seems to have missed?
Question #2 - What is the greatest challenge presented by the merger? And are there any challenges the study seems to have missed?
Question #3 - If our communities choose not to merge, the board of education will have to make some very difficult choices, both short-term and long-term. What suggestions would you offer to address the funding crisis we face?
Question #4 - Are there other questions you have heard that are not addressed in the study?
Each group will take notes on large flip charts, then report their conclusions, ideas and questions back to the large group.
"Hopefully by the end of the evening, everyone will have a better understanding of where we are headed and and have the facts related to the proposed merger," said Mr. Tangorra.
