On Wednesday, Aug. 3, the NYS Education Department announced that $1.5 million in private donations will enable the state to reinstate the 2012 January Regents exams.
The announcement reverses the department's previous decision to cut all January Regents due to budget cuts.
According to high school principal Renee Rudd, the news is a boost to many students may need the opportunity to take the mid-year exams to graduate.
"This provides students an opportunity to take the exams without having to wait until June 2012," she said.
"There may be some students who were unable to complete the graduation requirements in June or August. This gives those students an additional opportunity to graduate."
Despite the good news, she warns that the Education Department has yet to identify which Regents exams will be reinstated. It could be all or part of those that had been formerly offered. She expects that information to be released sometime in the near future.
She also warns that the reinstatement is the result of a one-time gift. Future funding for January Regents remains unknown.
The exams will be given January 24-27, 2012.
