Beginning this fall, magnetic swipe cards will replace traditional metal keys to unlock the exterior doors at all three school buildings. The change will make the buildings safer for both students and staff.
The new swipe cards use individualized code embedded on a magnetic strip—such as those found on a credit card and used in most modern hotel keys. The user simply inserts the card into a reader and if the code is correct, the door automatically unlocks.
The new system eliminates the need for metal keys which are often misplaced or in some cases never returned when a staff member leaves the district.
"Although it is unlikely, someone could find a lost key and use it to gain entry into the building," said Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Brady Boyd.
"If someone loses a swipe card, we just deactivate the code and the card no longer works."
Staff members will be assigned cards programmed specifically for the hours they need building access. For example, teacher cards might enable access 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Coaches or custodian with weekend responsibilities would have different cards to give weekend access.
"The buildings will be more secure; we can now control access and avoid the potential problems that come with a lost key," said Mr. Boyd.
