Absentee ballot applications for proposed Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk merger now available

Absentee ballot applications are available for the upcoming Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk school district merger statutory referendum on Thursday, Oct. 18.

A different process for this vote

The New York State Education Commissioner through the New York State Education Department oversees all aspects of the statutory vote—from the date and time of the vote to how and where the votes will be counted. The commissioner also determines the absentee ballot procedures.

Residents who will not be in the area on Oct. 18 or otherwise unable to vote in person may request an absentee ballot packet at the district office.

Unlike the process for other school votes, absentee ballot applications and absentee ballots for this merger vote will be mailed together in a single voter packet. Voters must return—both the completed application and the completed ballot together—to the District Clerk Ken Long no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Because the process is different from usual, voters will receive very specific instructions with each voting packet.

“I encourage all absentee voters to read those instructions very carefully,” said Mr. Long.

“The slightest error completing or returning the application or the ballot may disqualify the ballot, so it’s important that voters follow each step exactly as outlined.”

To obtain an absentee voter packet or for further information, please contact District Clerk Ken Long at the Ilion Central School District Central Office, 1 Golden Bomber Dr., Ilion or call 894-9934. The office is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
