Hi—I am Junior-Senior High School teacher Karen Anderson!
A
23-year Ilion veteran, Ms. Anderson currently teaches Health/Anatomy
and science. She is the chairman of the science department and the
district health coordinator.
Last year, she helped start the Jr.-Sr. high school's St. Baldrick's children's cancer fundraiser in which students and staff shave their heads in solidarity with children who lose their hair due to chemotherapy. The effort has raised nearly $6000 in two years!
And yes, that photo to the right is Ms. Anderson getting her head shaved!
What do you like best about what you do?
Those days when I leave here knowing that I had great interaction with my students—days when I just feel like we (my students and I) clicked. Those days usually involve life-lessons, not facts. I love days like that!
What event here at Ilion CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career.
Ilion has always been a place of great support when people are in need. Over the years I have been involved in many great causes - some were local, some were international, but the Ilion staff and community are always very generous to those in need.
Where are you involved outside of school and what you like best about it?
I am very involved in my family and my church - St. James Episcopal Church in Clinton. My family and faith are what drive me, comfort me, and encourage me to be true to myself.
What former jobs have you held?
I taught PE, I have been a bank teller, a waitress, and a tour guide at the F. X. Matt Brewing Co.
Where were you educated?
Southwestern High School in Jamestown, NY, SUNY Buffalo, and SUNY Cortland.
Where have you lived?
Lakewood, NY (southwestern New York near Jamestown), and the Mohawk Valley.
If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?
Something outdoors (depends on the season - ski, kayak, ride my bike, hike) with family and friends.
What book and/or author are you currently reading?
"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett
If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?
A mix of many different artists or instrumental soundtracks from movies.
What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?
TV—"Parenthood," Movie—"The Sound of Music," Actor - not sure?
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would love to go to Australia - it looks like an amazing place.
What one thing would you share that people might not know about you?
I know how to play the piano.
