Starting the day with Channel 6 News

photo of broadcast teamEach morning while classmates visit lockers or hang with friends, the Channel 6 News team is busy wrapping up the last details for the day's broadcast.

"We start as soon as our advisor Ms. Rodio unlocks the computer lab door, usually about 7:45," said co-host Corinne Hall.

The current team of Corinne, co-anchor Dan North, and cameraman Patrick Bergin and technician Ian Wiernicki have just 15 minutes to check the Channel 6 email for announcements, organize and edit their scripts, and double-check their equipment.

At precisely 8 a.m. Ian connects the signal to the school's internal cable network.

What follows is pretty much routine—the Pledge of Allegiance, announcements and news, the word of the week, and the day's cafeteria offerings.

Occasionally JSHS Principal Ms. Rudd drops in with an important announcement that she personally delivers on-camera. Other than her visits, the team is left on its own to write, produce, and broadcast each day. For that reason, Ms. Rudd only approves students who will accept that responsibility.

"There is a huge trust factor," she said.

"I trust that they will take care of the news and not do anything inappropriate."

Although the team has been as large as six, this year begins with just four. Corinne and Dan have been a part of school drama productions, so they are comfortable stepping in front of the camera as co-anchors.

"I like to speak to people," said Dan.

"It's exciting to do this every morning," added Corinne.

Behind the scenes are Patrick and Ian making certain the technology is running smoothly.

So listen every morning for the day's announcements and that familiar sign-off—"From all of us at Channel 6 News, have a great day."
