High School seniors Shelby Callaghan and Frank Sheffield and junior
Johnna Bernard have been selected to perform in New York State School
Music Association's (NYSSMA) annual All-State Music Festival to be held
Nov. 29 - Dec. 2 at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of
Music
Shelby and Johnna will perform with the All-State Women's Chorus and Frank will perform with the All-State Mixed Chorus. The three students competed against more than 7000 talented high school musicians to fill just 790 places in the festival's eight performing groups.
"A school is honored to have a single musician selected to All-State," said Ilion Music Department Chairman Mark Bunce.
"To have three students selected is extraordinary. Having Shelby, Johnna, and Frank all singing is a sign of the incredible musical talent in our school. Our music department could not be any prouder of them."
The competition is open to sophomores and juniors who rehearse and perform in a high school music ensemble. Under the guidance of their high school music teachers, the competitors rehearse complicated musical pieces that they later perform before an adjudicator (judge) at an area festival.
Judges compile a list of the highest scoring students. That list and individual score sheets then go on to a selection committee that matches the most qualified musicians with the available spots in each ensemble.
The selected students then travel to Rochester the following school year to rehearse and perform at the two-day performance. Internationally renowned college professors lead and conduct the groups.
Mr. Bunce noted that working with world-class conductors and performing with such talented musicians is a rare opportunity for high school students.
"This level of student accomplishment is made possible only with the support of our community and our board of education. Music and the other arts are important parts of a student's education and we thank everyone for making this possible," said Mr. Bunce.
