Students in Ecology Club spent a fun fall day mountain biking October 25 at Potato Hill Farm's Forestport Campus located in Boonville, NY. Potato Hill is part of the Black River Outdoor Education Program which is dedicated to developing an awareness, understanding and an appreciation of the environment. Students that visit learn while they participate in activities that increase their physical well being such as mountain biking, hiking, or snowshoeing.
The unpredictable fall weather cooperated as the students enjoyed biking on wooded trails throughout the campus. By the end of the day they rode a record breaking 17 miles! Before pushing the pedals, students are assigned biking equipment, evaluated on their riding ability, learn about bicycle safety and are given instructions from the Potato Hill staff.
During the visit the Ecology Club students also spent time learning about aqueducts and the ecology of the canal. They learned how aqueducts were built to maintain the correct water levels in the canal to allow for transportation of goods. They also learned about watersheds and water flow in New York State. As a special bonus during their trip, they saw about 12 wild turkeys!
