Several Remington Elementary fifth grade students
have taken it upon themselves to organize the Endangered Species Club.
These students are aware that animal populations around the world are
disappearing at an alarming rate. Their goal is to raise awareness and
funds for animals in danger of extinction.
In
the near future, the club will be planning a fundraiser in order to
raise money to help endangered species. This year, the students have
chosen to adopt the jackal. The jackel looks very much like a dog and
is part of the canine family. Their coats are golden-redish-brown in
color. The major home range of the jackel is in Africa, and golden
jackels can be found in parts of Asia. The jackels are an endangered
species due to overgrazing, habitat destruction and diseases from
domestic dogs. More information on the jackel can be found on the
Animal Planet website.
When the students hold the fundraiser, proceeds will be given to an organization that will use the money to help save the jackals. The ambition of these students demonstrates show important it is to give back to all species.
