Get ready to read...across America!

And...go green-grab a book to swap

Read Across America logoGet out those books and get ready to read! Remington Elementary students will be participating in Read Across America on Friday, March 2, 2012.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA). The program calls for every child and adult across the country to celebrate reading. The event is held on March 2nd, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Green is the theme for this year’s event. In an effort to celebrate Read Across America and embrace the green theme, Remington will be holding a book exchange on March 2nd. During the week of February 27th-March 2nd each child in Pre-K through sixth grade is encouraged to bring in a book that they are ready to part with. The books that are brought in will be collected and sorted by grade level.

On Friday, March 2nd any student that brought in a book will be allowed to come to the library and select a “new” book that was brought in by a classmate in their grade. By recycling books, we will be incorporating the green theme into our Read Across America celebration.

Photo of Cat in the HatAs part of the day's activities, students will have D.E.A.R. time. D.E.A.R stands for Drop Everything And Read. During D.E.A.R time, everyone in the school will have to stop what they are doing and read for that period of time.

The Read Across America celebration doesn’t have to stop when school ends that day. Take some time at home to do a little reading, too. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child."
