SELF program has a day at the spa

Girls in the Remington Elementary Self Esteem for Learning  Foundations (SELF) Program enjoyed some pampering from the Herkimer BOCES Cosmotology students. On Wednesday, May 9 the group visited the Cosmetology Department and had the opportunity to get a manicure and have their hair cut and styled.

The SELF program is a group of 13 fifth and sixth grade students selected by Principal Rich and their teachers. The goal of the program is to build self confidence and respect of self and others. Funding is provided by the Ilion Foundation and Walmart. In the past the girls have gone on a tour of Herkimer County Community College and are planning a trip to Clinton for a hike at Root Glen soon.

SELF-less donation

Rebecca Zabry, a sixth grade student at Remington Elementary, decided she wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who have long-term medical hair loss.

Cosmetology student Jenna Bowalek cut Rebecca’s hair allowing her to donate 10 inches to Locks of Love. Both girls demonstrated true character. Jenna donated her time and expertise to cut Rebecca’s hair. Rebecca exemplified selflessness and giving of one's self to help others in need. Below is a photo of Jenna and Rebecca with lock of hair in hand!
